If you never heard of Aleph you should immediately start researching about them. Here is a short explanation:
Aleph is a novel asynchronous, Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus algorithm based on the structure of a family of Directed Acyclic Graphs that solves many of blockchain's shortcomings. With high speed, low latency, and lots of decentralization, the Aleph team is building a permissionless platform that achieves these properties just as good as any permissioned solution.
