Discovered at the Hacienda de Cara Cara in Venezuela in 1976, Their origins are unclear, not knowing if they are a cross pollination or mutation. They were found on a Washington navel tree.

I bought a couple of navel oranges at my local supermarket not knowing they were Cara Cara's. They look pretty much the same as a regular navel orange until you slice them open.

Navel Orange

Cara Cara's are noted for their rosy flesh, ranging from pinkish to dark red. They are juicy, sweet, low in acid with very little pith and segments separate cleanly.

The flavor is complex, described as hints of cherry, rose-petal and blackberry.

Cara Cara's from South Africa are in market starting in August.Venezuelan in October and California are available from November to April.

You should find a sticker with Cara Cara on your navel to let you expect the pink/red variety.
