I've known the classic moon cakes since my childhood. Every year in autumn they are given away and I like to treat myself with 1 or 2 of these to a nice cup of tea. Meanwhile I like both the sweet and the salty ones. But I prefer the sweet moon cakes, though. Filled with a paste of red beans, everyone can actually eat them and they don't taste funny for us Europeans. For the salty version of the mooncake I needed several attempts to get used to it. Especially the salty duck egg in the middle needs getting used to. But once used to it, they're actually not bad 😆
Von klein auf kenne ich die klassischen Mondkuchen. Jedes Jahr im Herbst werden sie verschenkt und 1 oder 2 gebe ich mir sehr gerne zu einer guten Tasse Tee. Mittlerweile mag ich sowohl die Süßen als auch die Salzigen. Ich bevorzuge allerdings eher den süßen Mondkuchen. Gefüllt mit einer Paste aus Rote Bohnen, kann sie eigentlich jeder essen und schmecken auch nicht irgendwie komisch für uns Europäer. Für die salzige Version des Mondkuchens habe ich allerdings mehrere Anläufe gebraucht, um mich daran zu gewöhnen. Besonders das salzige Entenei in der Mitte ist gewöhnungsbedürftig. Doch einmal dran gewöhnt, sind sie eigentlich gar nicht schlecht 😆
This year my mom surprised us with the Taiwanese version of the mooncakes. First, they are beautiful to look at and second, they are delicious. They are filled with sweetened taro. If you ever got a chance to try them, do it. You will not regret it 😍
Dieses Jahr überraschte meine Mum uns mit Taiwanesischen Mondkuchen. Sie sehen nicht nur toll aus, sondern schmecken richtig lecker. Statt Rote Bohnen haben sie eine süße Taro Füllung. Ich freue mich schon auf den nächsten Herbst 😍

I knew them through my wife's family in Hong Kong. And where we have lived in the USA they are not readily available. I guess there may be a mail order option, but probably more expensive than I can accept.
Ah okay. Sadly you don't have got an Asian Shop around the corner. Maybe your wifes family could send you some next year ;)

Ab und zu bekommst du sie in den kleinen Asian Shops. Uns werden sie immer von Verwandten aus der Heimat mitgebracht. Es ist eine große Tradition bei uns 😊

Entenei... Das klingt nach einer Herausforderung. Sind aber hoffentlich keine 1000 jährige Eier. Hab mal Quallensalat mit 1000 jährigen Eiern serviert bekommen. Das war mehr als gewöhnungsbedürftig. Junge Junge
OH ja, 1000 jährige Enteneier sind sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig :D Allein die Farbe schreckt mich immer wieder ab. Bei den Mondkuchen sind die gesalzenen Enteneier allerdings viel besser und einfacher zu essen.
Wo hast du denn deine Erfahrungen mit den Eiern gesammelt?
War eine Mutprobe aus meiner WG-Zeit. Ein Mitbewohner hat die Zutaten in einem asiatischen Feinkostladen gekauft. Noch gewöhnungsbedürftiger waren die Quallen ;-).
Hahahhaaha auch noch Selbstversuche... selbst ich traue mich da nicht :D
