Kam Wah Cafe & Bakery (金華冰室) @ Mongkok, Hong Kong

in #food5 years ago

With no more than 4 days in Hong Kong during our recent visit, we knew we had to definitely come up with a proper list of places we wanted to visit. This of course, included the many many delicacies Hong Kong had to offer.

We have been to Hong Kong a number of times (usually a few days stop-by) but not once were we able to properly stay a long period of time to try and see everything so each of our visits always felt new in a way. From our last two posts, we visited The Big Buddah, Tian Tan and another new place we visited is the Kam Wah Cafe & Bakery in Mongkok.

We have walked past this place so many times in the past and have always said we will try it out as we have heard it is one of the top 10 "cha chaan teng" (Hong Kong cafe) in Hong Kong. It's true. Hong Kong has so many delicious foods and we were always full to even walk in. This time we made sure we went... for breakfast :D

Store front.

Cakes, tarts & bread are just a few of what this place specialises in.

Full menu that is laminated under the glass of the table top.

They have a good range from cakes and breads to noodle and rice dishes and a variety of drinks too. If you can't read Chinese, don't be afraid to ask the staff to bring you an English menu.

Bo Lo Yau (菠蘿油).

This is a 'pineapple bun' with a slab of butter inside. There is no pineapple in this bun but the name came from the top of the bun having a texture of a pineapple. This bun is sweet but paired with the butter, it makes it kind of savoury too. Personally, the butter they put inside was too huge of a slab so we spread a bit inside the bun before taking out the rest of it.

Hong Kong style French Toast.

Inside the French Toast was peanut butter. The French Toast was served with a bit of butter on top. On every table in this cafe are bottles of different sauces and one happened to be maple syrup. You can easily add on as much as you like, of course. Some people prefer to eat the toast without the syrup as it may be too sweet.

Hot Hong Kong Milk Tea.

We aren't coffee people but rather milk tea fanatics. It's a no brainer for us to pair our Hongky meals with a decent milk tea. Besides, this place is also well known for these traditional Hong Kong beverages!

You can also get a cold version of the milk tea. Background of this bun is the cold milk tea. Soooo good!

We visited after the morning peak but also before lunch - around 10 in the morning. Shops in Hong Kong are not yet open so it meant the streets weren't really busy yet. The cafe was fairly full but we still managed to get a seat to ourselves without sharing tables within a short few minutes. At other times we walked by, the place was pretty busy and a lot of people were seen getting take away instead.
For the 4 items we ordered for breakfast, it cost a total of HKD $66 and roughly AUD $11.50! Not bad at all in our opinion. This place is worth visiting and trying as it did live up to expectation. Until this day, we still think of the milk tea and drooling as we think, haha! ^^

大致上一樣, 冰室其實是紅豆冰那類開始的, 之後才開始賣吃的
