Moroccan dishes #3 : Pastilla

Pastilla is usually considered as the best Moroccan dish by tourists and even by Moroccan people. This dish belongs to Andalusi cuisine and it was then transfered to Morocco by Mouriskis. And there is an another version which tells us that Pastilla first appeared in Morocco and then was transfered to Andalusia.

Now for the meaning of Pastilla, it's a spanish word which refers to a little pie. I really recommand any foreigner to try this typical Moroccan dish. It will cost you 6$ or more. But it worths tasting.

This dish can be either eaten using folks, either by hands as most of persons eat it.

Pastilla has lots of varieties:

  • fish pastilla: this variety is the most expensive one because the pie has at least 3 types of fish within like shrimp and ... in addition to mushrooms and this kind of Pastilla tastes a bit spicy.
  • almond and chicken pastilla : as you see in the 2nd and 3rd picture, it's decorated on top using white sugar and cinnamon. For the inside of it, you will find only the good slices of chicken with cooked oignons in it.
  • Vegetable pastilla : Personnaly, I'm not really into it. Although it's the healthiest one, but still it's the least served type of Pastillas.
