Unless it's something completely unpalatable you can still serve the primary function of satisfying your appetite right? And when worst comes to worst, you'll learn from the experience and at least recognise a food as being something you don't like to ensure you avoid it next time.
And this is the reason why I think being too safe at the restaurant, regardless of which cultural cuisine it happens to be, is in the long run less beneficial to the diner because you inevitably start reducing the options on the menu to just the very few safe dishes until it no longer feels like a choice.
