Season of wonders

in #football5 years ago

If you are not a football fan, then I'm sorry the title of this post mislead you here. It sounds like an appreciation post, right? Well, this is more than appreciating. So many things happened this season that made our jaw dropped. The comebacks and results were something we never expected, but as the usual saying states; it's football and anything can happen.

Where should I start from? The happenings in EPL or the incredible results in champions league? Okay, let me save the least expected for the last.

Arsenal had chances of being in the top four, still they are not there. They currently sit in the fifth position with three points behind Tottenham. Before today, they were in the fourth spot with six matches left, and guess what? All six fixtures were matches they should win. No top six club was in it. Again, those competing with them had tougher fixtures. They couldn't get a win in their last four matches, and now they are hoping on Tottenham to lose her last match so they could advance if they win. Well, they still stand a chance of playing in next season's champions league if they win the Europa league. With a 3 - 1 advantage in the first leg, it should be easy for them. But with all the recent comebacks we've been seeing, we can't conclude yet. In few hours time, we shall know their fate.

Manchester United also disappointed a lot of their fans. They were in fire after Mourinho left. Right now, they are in the same position Mourinho left them. They couldn't even get a win against Huddlesfield to ignite the spirit of their fans. The most interesting is the battle between Manchester City and Liverpool. The Reds had seven points lead at a point, but right now, City is ahead of them with a point. Their last matches will decide who gets the trophy. While Manchester City will be playing against Brighton this Sunday, Liverpool will be facing Wolves.

There is nothing interesting in other leagues because we have winners already. The only league yet to be decided is Eredivise. Ajax and PSV have the same points with two matches left. Something interesting might happen in that league soon. Since Ajax has lost their champions league dreams, the league will be their only focus now.

Talking about Ajax, they had a 1 - 0 advantage against Tottenham in the first league. All they had to do is get a win or a draw in the second leg and advance to the final stage. They did all they could but Lucas Moura was in the right place at the right time. He scored three goals for Spurs giving them a 3 - 2 win in Ajax's stadium. They qualified on away goals just as they qualified against Manchester City. That result was unexpected because Ajax successfully defeated two powerful clubs, Juventus and Real Madrid. We had thought Tottenham wouldn't stand a threat, but they proved otherwise.

The biggest shock of them all is the match between Barcelona and Liverpool. After a 3 - 0 loss in the first leg, Liverpool still advanced to the final stage by defeating Barcelona by 4 goals to nil in the second leg. Two of their best players were absent, still they did the impossible.

If Ajax's wins in the champions league didn't shock you, then Tottenham being in the finals should do the job. If that was expected, Liverpool's comeback would have raised you up. I hope the wonders is enough. I wouldn't be surprised if another comeback happens tonight, but it looks almost impossible.

Well, it's just a matter of time to find out.

Until then...
