Manchester United have exercised the clause in David de Gea's contract that allows the club to offer him an additional year to his soon-to-expire contract.

The goalkeeper's deal was set to expire at the close season but United have exercised the clause of an extra year extension which ties him down to the club until 2020.

Talks have failed to yield positive fruits over a new contract for the Spain International and he would have been free to enter into negotiations with any club by January 1st.

United however were not willing to wait till the last minute and have decided to exercise the clause as stated in the deal De Gea signs in September 2015.

De Gea is one of the nine players whose contract was set to expire at the end of the season and like the club did for Anthony Martial, they have exercised same right for De Gea.

The former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper has been the subject of transfer to Real Madrid over the last few years with a recent deal falling through in the summer of 2015.

Manager, Jose Mourinho is very confident that the club will do all necessary to keep the prolific 28-year old shot stopper.
