It's Tuttle Twin Tuesday!

Every Tuesday for the next 8 weeks, I will review each of the Tuttle Twin books.

The Tuttle Twins go to summercamp and learn about the golden rule.

The Tuttle Twins and the Golden Rule

The Tuttle twins are spending a week at summer camp and it's full of activities and adventures. They learn about competition and how to use their strengths to win.

They also learn how to use their cunning to cheat their way to victory.

Ut oh, what are they up to.

The children learn that when you do something cruel to another, they are likely to do something cruel back to you. This is known as "blowback".

Blowback: The negative, unintended consequences of harming or interfering with others.

The Golden Rule

The children learn about the cycle of aggression, where constant battling and retaliation leads to ongoing fighting and conflict. How is this prevented? How can we end the cycle? By living by the golden rule:

Golden Rule: A general principle that a person should treat others the way that the person wishes to be treated by them.

Teaching our children about the Golden Rule

This is a biggie, a rule that is highly prized in this household. By teaching our children to not do things to others that they would not want done to themselves, we are ending the cycle of "I had it first" and "i'm telling mom" and "Mom, she took!".

Of course we still hear these phrases throughout the day, but it's always followed up with, "Would you like your sister to do that to you?" A constant reminder of the Golden Rule.

The Law and the Prophets

As followers of Messiah, we strive to teach our children to have a heart of obedience towards the words of the Most High. Not just obeying a list of commands, but to desire to do good and to treat others well.

“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets." Matthew 7:12

Overcoming selfishness is not easy, it's a challenge even for parents. But this is needed before ever thinking of the wants and desires of others before thinking of the wants and desires of ourselves. If parents can demonstrate this to their children, they will understand that it's not only possible, but it's good to do. This is the Law and the Prophets.

Working together, considering the needs of others, brings much joy.
