BEACON (5-minute Freewrite)

If you'll permit me, I am going to challenge myself to stay in the same story for all the 5-minute Freewrite Prompts for the month of February! Let's see how this turns out...

Wind rocked the coach bus and debris collided with its windows. Each snapped palm frond, discarded tour brochure, and loose hat that struck the window caused Felix to jump a bit higher.

A small boy bounced up and down in the seat ahead of Felix. The boy's mother tried several times to still the child, but he continued to vibrate like a Mexican jumping bean. Felix made a mental note to retrieve one of the novelty items from the gift shop before returning home to his Mother. She'd always talked about them, but Felix doubted she'd ever seen one in person.

He glanced at the waiting cruise ship and a small collection of guests climbing the gangplank. The ship swayed and bobbed on the churned surf. A more seasoned crew member told Felix this storm was nothing compared to the hurricane the Captain took them through the previous year.

"Oh my," Felix uttered, "look at that beacon get tossed around." He thought the statement had been dampened by his brain, skull, and rain soaked hair. However, the internal monologue had slipped out through his gaping mouth.

"Buoy," the bouncing boy said. "A beacon is fixed in place to provide a signal. Like that lighthouse." He popped upward, head almost colliding with the overhead bin. "Over there. That's a beacon." He went down on his knees. Then pulled his small frame up again, using the back of the seat, in one smooth motion. "You're looking at a buoy."
