NOT SMART (5-minute Freewrite)

'Well, that was not smart,' he thought, as thunder rumbled in the distance and rain started to fall.

The remote scenic lake was perfect for a romantic afternoon picnic. Everything was going as planned. The picnic basket was filled with small sandwiches, fruit, chocolates, and even a decent bottle of wine. The large thick blanket he found at the farm supply store was rolled out under the shade of a huge aspen, already turning golden ahead of Fall.

Now, he watched her car drive down the dirt and gravel road away from their rendezvous by the lake. The scene played out so fast, he was stunned.

She had been his first kiss. His first lover. His first real love.

So he had proposed.

"Oh Harold. I like you very much. It's just that... Well, I could never marry you." And with a tiny twitter of laughter she turned to go.
