5-minute Freewrite: Prompt - Scream

It started with a scream followed by a faint thug. It almost sounded like a big bag of clothes hitting the ground.

It was already half past 8, Candice and Gemma went their separate ways after having a quick dinner together after work. They happened to stay in the same condominium.

As she reached the lobby waiting for the lift to come down, Gemma heard a faint thug coming not far from the lobby area. Her heart jumped. You could say it was a hunch, as the words of a taxi driver suddenly crossed her mind.

"Young lady, I've sent passengers up the hill to that nearby casino. It's been years but I could never forget the sound of a body hitting the ground. I've heard them a number of times. Many who have gambled their livelihood away jumped to their death because they lost it all. That sound still sends shiver down my spine..."

It was dark and there weren't many people around as it was dinner time for many on a week night. Her hunch drew her to a nearby bush. She wasn't expecting much, but reality proved her wrong. There was a leg.

Her eyes widened.

There was a figure standing not far from her, it was Candice. They exchanged looks and acted quickly. Candice was supposed to head to the next block where she stayed but then remembered that she had borrowed Gemma's hair clip earlier during dinner and decided to catch her quickly at the block lobby.

"There's a body, what should we do? Is she still alive?" gasped Candice.

There was no sign of blood anywhere, just an unconscious young lady. Gemma checked her pulse. She was breathing. "Candice, can you head over to the guardhouse and inform them to call an ambulance, please? I'll check on her to make sure she's alright."

Candice nodded and went away swiftly.

"Miss, are you alright? Can you hear me? Don't worry, I'll be right here with you. I'm gonna gently touch your body, please let me know if any of those parts hurt. I'm not gonna move you, I'll just be checking to see whether you're bleeding anywhere."

The young lady opened her eyes and stared into the sky blankly. It almost felt like she couldn't hear her, or much less cared what she said.

Gemma gently touched and felt her arms, the back of her head, her legs and her back, all the while asking whether there was any pain. She shook her head. After what seemed like a good 10 minutes, block tenants would be seen passing by asking if they were alright and needed help.

The young lady decided to sit up and suddenly felt pain on her hips so she laid back down while they waited for the ambulance to come.

"Should we call your parents?"

She shook her head and looked away. It was obvious that she didn't want to answer.

Candice brought the security guards and managed to track down the unit to which the young lady stayed and found her housemate. It wasn't too hard to guess as there was an opened balcony door with its lights off. It just felt eerily peculiar so they just went with their gut feeling.

She was lucky to have fallen on the bush. A little further and she would have landed on a pile of rocks.

The ambulance came and carrier her away while Candice and Gemma followed the young lady to the hospital.

The parents were contacted and were shocked at such news. They were from another state and said that they'd take the first bus ride the next morning.

"She's alright, no life threatening injuries except for her dislocated hip. She said she felt dizzy while hanging out her clothes and fell off the balcony..."

It certainly didn't seem that way, they knew there was more to what happened.

It was a long night, as they bid farewell they went back home with tired shoulders and a big mystery that was never resolved till this very day.
