5 Minute Freewrite Day 481: Sound of Sirens

The ship was going slow, the rudder barely moving left to right, then right to left. There was barely any wind for the sails to catch, but the cold, the dampness and the dark brought with themselves a thick fog that limited my world to what little I could see: this corpse-like boat, and the ghost of giant rocks ahead.

At first, not even my mind conjured a sound, like just recently awoken from a deep slumber, but little by little, at the compass of my cold-induced shaking, I started to think again, about her, about them. The purest feeling of loneliness filled my entire being, and I begged in whimpers for something, a face, a sound, to appear and kill my absence of presence. And then, my little world of old floating wood and looming stone began to be filled with the sweetest whispers, a melody of invitation, a verse that caressed my very soul.

I heard an echo calling my name, floating and bouncing from between the rocks that weren’t faraway landmarks anymore, but the walls that escorted the boat, the unmovable existence that decided what path to take. Something was pulling at my heartstrings, and at the edge and front of the deck I went, looking around, chasing the songs, the calling, towards whatever being made them. I saw them amidst the distance, white and smiling, naked as a soul that confesses each and every sin, but still away from me.

So lost in them, so abandoned to the enclosure that secures whatever sweetness I may get, the boat chases at the speed of a funeral march, the same tempo of their enchanting laughter. Something crashed with something. The boat and its rumbling, the sound of sirens, the wet and cold darkness. And the music was lost in the waves.
