Forty-four | 5-minute Daily Freewrite
"Forty-four? No no no no no.... You can't buy that car no matter how cheap he sells you second hand!"
Growing up as Chinese, we are taught not to buy anything with the number 4. Worse still 44. And even more worst if 444. And the worst if it is 4444. 4 times of 4.
The sound of number four in Chinese word 四 (si) sound like 'die' in Chinese 死 (si). So it is a huge thing here when it comes to buying anything with number.
Our lifts' numbering here is 1, 2, 3, 3A, 5.....
So I found myself being dumbfounded one day when I taught my younger son on numbers while we were at the lift. When we reached number 4, and it appeared 3A, "Where is the number 4 mummy?
Even on landed properties, the developer also tried to skip the number 4 and all become 3A or 13A or 23A, not 4, 14 or 24. You get the idea. And that's when the developers are Chinese and they strongly believe in this idea of your luck is destined to the numbers associated to your life.
Some really superstitious family will not want to give birth on the month of April or they stop at number 3. To them it is not superstitious, it is rather smart move.
Well, I am a Chinese with mixed up beliefs. So number 4 is just number 4 to me. My parents have 4 of us children.
My husband's car number plate is 4488.
Forty-four? Die die?
Yee-up! Die die prosper prosper! 8 signifies prosper in Chinese.
Die die we also prosper prosper. Or whatever it is, it doesn't matter to us.
That is why we bought the car anyway. Ha! 😁

Interesting, that’s something I didn’t know.
In the west it’s unlucky 13 of course and building owners will sometimes purposefully omit a floor numbered 13.
