The kitchen was below decks. It had had that stainless steel gleam in the first century, but a few decades in, had begun to bear the frustrated scratchings of a thousand adolescent kitchen helpers. It was hard being a young person on an intergenerational starship. Or, more to the point, it was hard being a young person, full stop. But to Yeshua, it felt like these circumstances and this time period were the hardest a kid could have it. Yeshua felt the kitchen was the only place left to go. During the cook-offs, it was still a busy place, but other than that, Yeshua and the other young ones, who hadn't yet signed their contracts, had discovered it was one of the few studio rooms that they could enter without an adult. Maybe it was an oversight, or maybe, lost in the depths of The Handbook's third appendices there had been a possible alternative season that was a youth cook-off that had never made it from one-off to recurring challenge status due to the logistics of what children are like and having a limited pool of potential kids to draw from. Either way, the kids spent time away from prying eyes here, and since their parents had also done so, it was an open secret.
