Brandished and beaten

He led her through the house to the large room at the back. Here, as usually, were flowers, a newspaper and a case of old cigars. Jack never did understand why he kept those. They weren’t even of any noteworthy brand. The flowers were a day away from being thrown.
“Can’t say I expected much else from you, Jack.” Cloves and cinnamon, but she was a spice for the eyes.
“And what would you have, Melanie. I’d only just gotten back.” Jack went and sat on his bed, the frame credited his weight with a loud spurn whistle of its wood. He removed his shoes and curled his toes. Should one have forgotten or exhausted their supply of necessary functions, his feet, were one he made sure to check for quality. The age hadn’t given him his run around quite yet. But the snap of his toes on a second curling told a forecoming.
Melanie made a wince at his foots soundscape. “Did you have to do that as I came in?”
“No better a greeting.” Jack had a wry smile accompany his comment.
“So what were we supposed to go over. You made it sound like a dam had broke.”
“He was drunk ... again.” Jack replied brushing his curled hair back behind his ear. “You knew that, that’s why you’ve come this late.”
Melanie hadn’t known, but she had guessed. The days of when their son had been sober were now becoming more and more distant. “It’s not something very new, Jack. Is there anything else?”
Jack looked up while clasping his hands. He hadn’t been much of one for emotional outpours after their sons first arrest. “I got a call from the sheriffs office.” Jack stood back up and removed his jacket. Underneath it were bloodstains, they seemed to have been from someone’s face. As he threw the jacket and reached-

Times up! Another 5 minute freewrite. I tried to do the braiding of 3 prompts. I really enjoyed the challenge. This isn’t much of a story but a great mental exercise! Thank you @mariannewest
