FreeWrite: Doodling To Survive

It's funny how things change with situations. The very chalk she had wanted to throw at the boy sniggering behind her back, as she solved the math question on the board, was the thing that kept her sanity intact. She hated school only because of the kids. But her parents insisted it was the ticket out of their financial troubles, and so she came every single day.

The kids enjoyed making fun of her because of her old shoes or her second hand clothes. It didn't bother her on most days. She knew they were jealous because she always got top marks in class. So, she ignored the best she could and did what she was good at. Math.

Everything happened so fast. One minute she was at the blackboard solving a math question and the next, the classroom was shaking and things started falling, kids started screaming and running. Nothing like in the orderly manner they had been taught during the drills. There was chaos. She started running towards the door too and the next thing, she had woken up on the floor, unable to move too much.

At first she was disoriented. She could barely see but there was the thinnest ray of lighthope through a spot and after a while she figured she was under the teacher's table. She tried to move but her leg was caught under some rubble and it hurt too much to. She lay there for a bit trying to get her thoughts in order.

She knew they would do a head count once they made it to the assembly point. She waited and waited but that's the thing with waiting. And when you are in pain. Everything moved in slow motion. It felt like she had been there for an eternity, but her watch told her only 5 minutes since she became conscious. And she was out for about 15 minutes.

Was this a dream, a nightmare maybe. She became aware of the chalk she was still holding. Yes, it was real, not a nightmare. She started doodling on the table. She couldn't see much, because it was really dim, but enough to make out the white chalk against the black. She couldn't concentrate either because the pain was excruciating. Her body was uncomfortable from lying in one position. But she refused to look at her watch and continued to doodle.

When she woke up again, she was in a hospital bed. Her Mum was crying in a corner and her Dad was sitting beside her reading a magazine. The magazine had her on the cover with some doodles, with the caption "The Girl Who Doodled Her Survival." He looked up first followed by her Mum. They immediately called the doctors and nurses, and started fussing. Things were going to be just fine.
