Miami

Will Smith sang about it, Gloria Estefan’s band’s name was inspired by it and when there’s a TV show called Miami Vice, you know you want to visit it someday.

It is also the warmest place in America during winter so no surprise that sun lotion was invented there.

From Miami I take you to Malaysia because it has lots of sun and beaches too. Today some might be some going to the beach because it is a day off making it a long weekend. Today is the first day of Eid Mubarak. First day to celebrate a successful month of fasting for the Muslims.

Typically on this day, the morning is spent with family asking for forgiveness from older members for any hurt caused or wrong done. There’s a hierarchy in this, oldest to youngest. Meaning the second oldest “salams” the oldest and then gets in line. Then the third oldest “salams” the oldest and the second oldest and then gets in line. So on and so forth. There will be tears

During Raya, families dress in theme. Usually the same colour. This year, I decided to recycle some outfits and we did some mix and match for a change. So there are a couple of odd ones out.

Then you either go visiting or wait for visitors, either or. As the celebration lasts a month, you can always choose another day within the month to invite friends and family over. Then you eat and eat, and the kids collect “duit Raya” which literally means the “celebration’s money”.

These are handed out by the married and/or working adults to the younger ones especially the kids as well as the elderly family members. The kids who visit will also get duit Raya. They are placed in pretty envelopes and handed out when it’s time to leave the house.

Back in the day, you could walk into anybody’s house, no need for an invitation, and you’d be welcomed with food and drinks and the kids with their money filled envelopes.

Today, maybe not so much but there is still a lot of camaraderie as everyone wishes each other Selamat Hari Raya to those celebrating and Happy Holidays to the rest.

So Selamat Hari Raya and Happy Holidays!! 😊

Eid Mubarak. It is nice when the whole country is celebrating. And if people are sincere about asking for forgiveness.
