“Gene's father had said something to Gene that hurt his pride,” Emilia whispered in my ear. No wonder he looked so pissed off over in the corner by himself.
Gene could be very nice, but he also had a temper. And right now, it seemed that the bad mood Gene was present in the room.
“Let's go outside,” Emilia tagged on the shirt sleeves of her best friend Emily. They called themselves the to EEs. People thought that that was funny because it sounded more like someone was shrieking like being disgusted with something. But the two of them thought it was funny and told them that in other countries it sounded different. It sounded like the two A
s and everyone likes to be A okay. A on the top. A for the best - they had made up all kinds of slogans for themselves and were still working on finding better ones.
After all, they would like to go into show business and that is what it takes to be discovered. You need to be special, different and you need to develop a thick skin. At least, that is what they had read in the behind the scenes magazines they were able to get from their auntie - who was very pretty - once. Then, she had had the dream of going to Hollywood and becoming a famous actress.
Actually, she had gone and had come back with a suitcase full of stuff.
One day, they had asked her about it when we all were visiting her house. She pulled out a book and said,
“Girls, look closely at this. This shows you how many lovers I had and how happy I was.”
And she was smiling in a way we had never seen her smile before.
From that day on, Emilia and Emily also wanted to go and experience many lovers. Not boys like Gene who got hurt when his dads told him anything. Didn't he know that his dad was just a bully and nobody in the village liked him?
On the other hand, nobody helped Gene either - maybe they didn't like him either. It was hard to like him when he was mad, with his face all dark and scrunched up and his fist at his side - like he was trying to hold himself back to not explode. But the imminent explosion could be felt all around him and it wasn't the good feeling auntie had told them about.
She had talked about lovers exploding and we really didn't quite understand what that meant. Auntie said to just wait. We too would know it some day and that is will feel really really good.
She had paused for a minute when she told them. Then, she looked us in the eyes and was very serious.
“Girls, EEs. You have to promise me something.
Go.
But never come back. Do you hear? You can only leave this place once - it takes too much strength to do it twice.
Go and never look back.
Forget about everyone here - including me and go.”
“It is a matter of survival!!”
She had been all serious when she said it. Don't wait too long, she had whispered and then, she started to laugh and talked about all the people in the village again like they never had had the conversation about her special book.
As the two EEs and I left the hall with Gene seething in the corner, we caught a glimpse of auntie and suddenly, she looked so old and used up and like there was no joy left in her.
Auntie saw us too.
One of her friends had told her that Gene was in trouble and she always had been watching out for him a little bit - ever since she had come back.
She called him her boy and just once it sounded like she slipped and said lover - the girls couldn't remember for sure and I wasn’t there.
When auntie saw us, she called us over to her.
“It is time,” she said. “You have to leave now or you will be stuck here forever.”
She told Emily, that her dad has been talking to Gene's dad about marrying her to him.
That is what brought on his anger. Because his dad told him that he was not good, too weak to even speak up when he was so deeply in love. His dad wasn't going to have it and go and make an end to the constant yearning for Emily here, Emily there.
“That is what your dad told me.”
He also said yes. That he will tell you to marry him. If you do that, you will die here. Your body might live for a long time, but you, you will be dead. And the two of you are going to be in Emily’s shoes sooner then you know it.
Stay, together, girls.
But go now.
“Go!”

Yikes! What a terrible village to call your hometown! I hope they do someday come back, but with power, passion, and a fierce determination to change that town so that no one will have to suffer like Auntie or Emily!

At least auntie was looking out for them. Hope they ran. wait, they might show up at your doorstep any minute now LOL
