If Only I’d Been
On a quiet street
where old ‘ghosts’ meet,
it was never an easy task
to act like everything is alright.
I’m haunted
by how things in the past
might have played out differently
if only I’d been more present,
if only I’d been more persistent,
if only I’d been more compassionate
and brave.
As I locked eyes with those familiar ‘ghosts,’
I can’t help but blame myself.
I blame myself for not knowing
and for not being able to understand.
I should have been more willing
to reach out,
to see others perspective—
and learn from it—
I could have done more...
But for me, it’s the end.
For you, you have a chance.
A chance to grow old.
To do better than me.
