Freewrite Day 479 Entry - Prompt: Beacon

in #freewrite5 years ago

Hello all,

This is my response to the Freewrite prompt, a daily writing exercise that I will be trying to get myself into the habit of doing. Thank you @mariannewest for hosting these. The Freewrite community has also graciously agreed to “adopt” me, promoting me on their page and giving me daily upvotes. It is much appreciated, and hopefully my writings will be up to their standards.

Prompt: “Beacon”

It was a pitch black night. Gina was sailing home from an amazing day spent snorkelling amongst the reefs. She had planned on coming in before dark, but forgot how quickly night falls here in the tropics. The stars were out in force, brilliant pinpricks of white light piercing the infinite veil. Gina loved being on the water at night, she felt truly embraced by the majesty of the universe. Alone, with no one around and nothing but the sounds of the water lapping against her boat to keep break the silence. Tonight was no different, as Gina sailed back towards home. And with a brilliant beam of light, the lighthouse beacon turned on, tuned to her proximity. Ahh, the benefits of GPS tracking and smart systems. It had taken her some time to setup, but the benefits of not having the beacon on until she got close to shore was entirely worthwhile. The beacon started its spinning, illuminating wide swaths of the rocky shore. She glimpsed fish in the shallows, darting away as the light passed overhead. While the shore was not too dangerous, the beacon provided her a foolproof guide to bring her home. It was her north star, her literal guiding light in the darkness. And on many nights, when she was feeling the night was a little darker than normal, it was her beacon of hope.

Great writing... I have no idea how people can do this 5 minute writing flow! Anyway, if you are interested @ifc has something a little similar, but the hook for a whole week, and your post can take any form that suits you!

I have featured you and this post for a Curation Contest here:

You can also join the fun and the community here:

I'm actually finding it quite easy. I just get an idea and run with it. I'm not super hard on the 5 minute cutoff, I usually give myself an extra 30 seconds to a minute to finish, as I like to have some kind of ending.

I am actually participating in that, I just posted my entry. I'm a little late on that, but will work harder on being on time for the next ones.

Thank you, that is much appreciated :)

Pretty sure he's actually already working on an entry or two. :) Thanks for the mention though bengy! PS great write up @nmcdougal94 ! You're quite talented and painted a great picture with your words.

Thank you :) it's very nice to hear that my writing skills haven't gotten rusty from not using them in years. I'm really enjoying this format for working on my creativity.

I just posted the entry for the first round. I hope you like it :)

You're welcome. :) And cool! I'll go check it out shortly and let the judges know it's time to start voting for round 1. Cheers.

It's not hard. You could do it. It makes you push all other thoughts aside. I spend a minute or two to see where I want to go and let it go. Try this .... https://www.themostdangerouswritingapp.com/ It helps :D

What a lovely little story, @nmcdougal94! Thanks for sharing it with us!

Congratulations on being featured by @bengy in his entry for the Pay It Forward Contest!

Thank you :) I intend to. I'm really enjoying this writing exercise. I'd say give it a try if you aren't already. It's way easier than I thought it'd be.

I love how the lone woman under the starry night sky in this mystic, epic tale suddenly calls up the GPS! Long live technology. :)
And here is today's prompt: https://steemit.com/freewrite/@mariannewest/day-480-5-minute-freewrite-tuesday-prompt-pineapple

I thought it made for a nice juxtaposition, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Thank you for sharing that. I'll get to that writing shortly :)

Great freewrite @nmcdougal94!. I don't do them as much as I should. I have so much fun with them. I do pretty much the same, give myself just a little bit of time to fix the major typos and such so one is not reading gibberish. I really like the weekend ones @mariannewest does too.

I honestly never thought of myself as a writer of any sort, these little stories and such everyone seems to love them and my style. Keep up the great work!!

You were featured in week 45 of @pifc's Pay It Forward Curation Contest by @bengy. @pifc is a Pay It Forward Community which believes in by helping others grow we build a stronger community. Thank you :) I think the 5 min is more of a guide to frame things in, and provide motivation to just get things down.

I feel the same haha. All the excellent feedback has been so nice. I'll keep an eye out for your stories :)

Yeah, it was very kind of @bengy to feature me. I'm going to have to see about doing that myself
