Chapter 10
The workers wore the same old clothing as the workers in the mine. Clothing similar to theirs. They were delighted with their discovery and decided it was a good time to catch a break and think thoroughly about their next move. They both opened their burlap bags and pulled out an apple. They kept looking over at the position of the guards and of the workers the entire time they ate, and they ate the apples in full – core included – not to leave any evidence behind.
There were a total of five workers with shovels per each wagon. They couldn't count the men with the wheelbarrows. The guards, like those at the mine, didn't care much about the ongoing work, as long as it was done. They were taking to each other, scouting the floor for four leaf clovers, or just whistling to themselves and walking in circles. They knew they couldn't intermix themselves with the workers – they couldn't get a hold of neither a shovel, nor a wheelbarrow. They needed to make a run for the building and hope for the best.
They sneaked under the train like two caterpillars and hid behind the wheels again. They looked at each other and nodded. They agreed that each would cover a side and as soon as both were clear they would try their luck and run. Their idea of a plan B was snatching the shovel of one of the workers and knocking the guards out if things went sideways.
