Bubbles in the Country - Day 24 Selfie Freewrite Celebration

Bubbles in the Country

Admit it. You like bubbles. There is something mystical and beautiful about these luminescent spheres of floating soap that kept me busy for hours as a child. We lived in the country, miles from neighbors or other children. Television was limited and you could only read, draw and play with dolls for so long before you grew bored.

Mom came to our rescue with homemade bubbles. She mixed just enough dish soap with water and handed us wands (sometimes homemade wands made from bread twist ties if we hadn't saved the store bought ones) and sent my brother and me off to amuse ourselves.

I would work at making the biggest bubble possible and watch as it wobbled in the air and suddenly burst in a big, wet splat on the porch, or better yet on my brother. He would try to make as many bubbles at once with one swipe until it rained bubbles.

It doesn't take a lot of money to amuse a child. We never had a lot. We got by, but I never felt that we were poor in spite of growing up wearing my cousin's hand-me-downs.

Mom was creative. She made us sock monkies and homemade play dough with food coloring. We'd make figures from the dough and dry them.

I remembered all of her tricks when raising my own children. I wonder at the commercialism that today's families are subject to and think we really had things better in a way.

What do you think?

very very cool, i love how the bubbles became colorful and you caught your face perfectly. excellent job. i love your memory or made up one, it is lovely. :)

Thanks so much! It was real memories. We were stuck in the country with a resourceful mom <3!

I love bubbles. Even my Sims have bubbles!!! Best thing anyone ever thought of. We did have home made bubbles when we were little and would always look for the biggest circle we could find to make giant bubbles!!! You are never too old for bubbles!! Great writing and use of the prompt!!

Aww I love it!

Motherhood is oddly elevating even for our generation. My mum was as creative as yours only we didn't have the idea of 'wands' so we played with our bubbles in basins, sinks or buckets. My siblings and I had to 'scoop' a mountain of weightless bubbles in our hands and blow them in the air like you would flying kisses then chase after them :D

Yes, it is. I can see you playing with the mountain of bubbles! Ah, those carefree days! Thank you for stopping!

Yes, the times are diametrically opposed; when we were children, as you well say, we had fun in a very simple and economical way, they were cheerful games and usually in a group, from playing with improvised balls in the street to making group games where running was an essential tool. And now, My God now; all the entertainment of the children go through an electronic device that normally isolates them from the outside world, spending whole hours locked in a world of autistic people; Of course we need a lot of money to keep children updated with the new software that comes up.
Regardless of all this situation, parents and the family in general, has a very important responsibility to try to balance the world of children today, it is not easy because the media the truth does not help much.
Well, like you, wandrnrose7, I had a lot of fun in my childhood without having any luxuries, it was really not necessary.

Greetings.

Yes, balance is everything, my friend. I fear for the children isolated and programmed by today's electronic babysitters. Regards, dear friend.
