The Amazing ‘Schönbrunn‘ Palace in Vienna

The former summer residence of the Habsburgs scores with imperial state rooms and a magnificent garden. Once upon a time Maria Theresia, Emperor Franz Joseph, Empress Elisabeth and family stayed here.

Schönbrunn Palace is one of the most beautiful baroque palaces in Europe. Owned by the Habsburgs in 1569, the wife of Emperor Ferdinand II, Eleanor of Gonzaga, had a pleasure palace built on the site in 1642 and named the estate "Schönbrunn" for the first time. The castle and gardens built after the Turkish siege in 1696 were completely rebuilt under Maria Theresia after 1743. Today, the castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical significance, unique location and magnificent facilities.

Already five years before the historical city center of Vienna, in the year 1996, the admission of castle and park of Schönbrunn into the world heritage list of the UNESCO took place.

The core zone

The core zone comprises the entire former baroque castle area, which is bounded to the north by Wiental (Schönbrunner Schlossallee), to the west by Maxingstraße and the Hietzing cemetery, to the south by Am Fasangarten and to the east by Gaßmannstraße and Grünbergstraße.

The actual castle with its outbuildings is thus part of the world cultural heritage as well as the park with its glasshouses and the Zoo (Tiergarten). The remains of the former main axis leading to the castle, today's Schlossallee, were also included in the narrower area of ​​protection. Overall, the core zone thus covers an area of ​​approximately 120 hectares. The historic buildings have a floor space of approximately 52,000 square meters.
