Friends and family members can be judgmental. They will prejudge you based on your personality and their attitude towards you. So. it is easier to talk to a person you do not know well, about personal problems and such rather than talk to a friend or family member who could also interrupt you and derive wrong meanings from what you said.

Speaking to a total stranger maybe awkward to some and most people wont be comfortable with it. It is also wise not to reveal too many personal details either.

A human is a social animal and also has the trait to keep searching for other humans. The need to socialize is inherent and cannot be ignored. Man is excited when he meets new people and starts a conversation to get to know others better.

So, many people do not actually feel shy of talking to strangers. You do not have to live up to the standard set by your friends when conversing with a stranger and you actually feel free and less inhibited.
