To many people in South East Asia, the durian is the King of Fruits.

For people who enjoy eating durian, its aroma that is extremely overpowering and lingering is considered pleasant while to others, it's highly unpleasant, disgusting and nauseating.

The persistence of its odour, which may linger for several days, has led to the fruit's banishment from hotels and public transportation in Southeast Asia.

Durians are expensive and sold by weight. The thick and thorny rind or husk make up of 85% of the weight of the fruit. As the fruits are seasonal, durian lovers do not mind paying exorbitant prices depending on the fruit species.

Opening the fruit requires skill and nowadays durian sellers are willing to open the fruits and transfer the flesh into plastic containers. This way, the customer does not have to lug the heavy fruits home.

A Singapore university researching ways to reduce food waste has discovered that cellulose extracted from the durian husk can be used to make biodegradable food wrapping as in cling film. The durian seeds produce a food stabiliser that can be used in probiotic foods. Kudos to the research team!
