Surthrival Trailer Mark 1 Update #30

Hello beautiful Humans!

I have a new update for my trailer build. Today I completed the brackets to allow the solar panels on the side of the trailer to sit at an angle to catch more sunlight.

I started by measuring a piece of 1" angle steel to cut @ 3' for one of my bracing.

I cut the steel @ 3' on my abrasive saw.

I cleaned up the cut on a grinding wheel.

Using a scrap piece of 1" square tube and a quick clamp I secured the angle piece to the piece of angle that was previously attached to the trailer.

A 1/4" hole was drilled through the piece.

I used a bolt as a pin and angled the steel to mate with the side solar panel frame.

I used a quick clamp to hold in place as I marked the angle to be drilled on a bench.

I folded the piece to rest in a vertical position and used the 1" square tube and quick clamp again to drill a hole at the top for storage during transit.

The second attachment point is at the rear of the trailer. However the length of the attached angle would be too short for me to add the support.

I measured and realized I needed at least 47" to create the proper angle for the panel frame to sit. I cut another angle piece at a similar size as the one that is already attached to the trailer.

I cut a piece @ 47" to be my brace.

20181103_165519.jpg

I cut another piece and painted it to attach .5" below the previously attached angle. I applied some leftover buytl tape to its back.

20181103_174605.jpg

I attached the piece to the trailer with 2 1/4-20 x 2" bolts.

I clamped the piece to the angle bracket on the trailer to mark the hole that needed to be drilled for attachment.

I then clamped the piece vertically to drill the hole that will be used to pin the bracing during transit.

Here is the bottom hole.

Here is the top.

I got a little too close to the edge when drilling this hole but I think it will be ok since it won't be bearing much load only the partial weight of the angle when pinned for transit.

I drilled 2 holes in a small 1" piece of angle so I could attach it to the solar panel frame and the angle bracket I was using to brace the solar panel frame.

That is looking really great @makinsuff! Are you making detailed blueprints of everything you have done along with the steps to doing them? I am just curious because I think that a lot of folks would love to do something like this.

I will! I will be releasing a .pdf of the entire build on the website I'm building @ https://thetinkertribe.com

Awesome @makinstuff! I am curious why you are using iron instead of aluminum for all the angle iron and tubing etc. Is it cost? It seems like aluminum would keep the trailer much lighter and also be easier to work with.

I was originally going toward aluminum, but the steel was cheap, and I had a friend that leant me a stick welder so I made the decision and went for it for this prototype.

I figured that you had a good reason (or two) @makinstuff! :)

I am sorry to comment here on an unrelated topic, but may I ask why you are upvoted hit pieces on me, from @iamthenerd?

Nevermind. Fully understand now. Looks like you are a Kokesh supporter. If you would like to know about plans the campaign was making to fuck up my life, you can check that out here:

Sorry to interrupt your post. Cool shit, by the way.
Upped.
