Contact Lens Wear

Contact lens are thin plastic materials shaped such that they can be place on the eye to corrective refractive errors, and thus make image appear sharper for an individual. Contact lenses are not only for the purpose of refractive error correction but may also be used in the treatment of certain ocular pathologies such keratoconus. Bandage contact lenses are given after eye surgeries to allow the eye to heal faster.

Contact lens fitting requires technical know how and must be evaluated by professional optometrist or ophthalmologist. The use of contact lens if not done right with the proper procedure and guidelines may cause more harm than good. Improper storage of the lens and its solution may habor fungi, protozoa and bacterial which may infect the eye and cause sight threatening damage to the eye. Acanthamoeba infection is the most common infection with contact lens uses and they are the most difficult to fight or treat. Contact lenses are much trouble to deal with so unless you are willing to go through all the trouble and guidelines that your optometrist may give you we suggest you stick to spectacle wear. An estimated percentage of 40 to 90 of contact lens wearer do not follow the proper guidelines given to them by their optometrist and this is know to lead to outbreak of eye infections on regular occasions.

Contact lenses may also be worn for aesthetic purposes, individuals with severe damage to the anatomy of the eye may also use contact lenses to mask those damages and make them more physically appealing to others, others also wear it just to change the color of the iris which is the part of the eye that has color when looking directly into the eyes of someone. It is estimated that about 45 million people in the United States are contact lens wearer the majority of whom are females and out of this number about ninety percent wears the soft contact lens which is safer and easier to adopt more than the hard contact lens.

What is @bettervision about?

@bettervision is is a project initiated by @nattybongo and friends to give back to the society the knowledge and skill acquired through the Optometric Studies in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana.It is an outreach system where we visit the less privileged communities to offer free eye screening services and education to the people within the community

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
To reduce or prevent vision loss through diseases such as glaucoma, cataract and refractive errors.

To enlighten the majority of the Ghanaian population about the importance of proper visual care.

To conscientize people on the need for regular eye checks

To get more people to have their wards screened within the Critical periods of a Child’s Vision Development; thus from ages 3 to till about 10 years.

To help the blind and people with low vision live a better life within the society through education of the general public to stop stigmatization.

To help in the fight of extreme poverty that puts the health of people at risk
