40 is the correct answer....8 of the small squares in the middle, then 18 of the next size, followed by 9 that are 2x2, then there are 4 squares sized 3x3 and finally the 1 big square. Congrats @geoffreydemars for the being the first one with the correct answer. SBD is on it's way!
