It is the sequel to Uncharted 3: Drake's Betrayal and this is the fourth installment and last series starring Nathan Drake Uncharted, as well as the last of the series to be developed by Naughty Dog. The game was released around the world on May 10, 2016.

Set after several years of the conclusion of Drake's deception (Uncharted 3). End of a thief continues Drake as he reunites with his long-lost brother, Sam, and tries to save him from a ruthless tyrant by finding a fabled legendary pirate treasure of Captain Henry Avery.

The development of the game was directed by Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley who previously worked on Uncharted: Drake's Treasure, Uncharted 2: The Thieves' Realm and the Last of Us. Druckmann and Straley were asked to direct the project after the departure of Uncharted long-term writer Amy Hennig and deception director of Drake Justin Richmond.

3 years after the events of Uncharted 3, Nathan Drake has apparently left the world of hunting fortune behind. However, it does not take much time for the adventure to come knocking when Drake's brother, Sam, re-emerges asking for his help to save his own life and offering an adventure Drake can not resist. In the hunt for a long lost treasure of Captain Henry Avery, Sam and Drake embark on a journey to find Libertalia, the pirate utopia deep in the forests of Madagascar. Uncharted 4: End of a thief takes players around the world, through the jungle islands, urban cities and snowy peaks in search of Avery fortune

The game starts in medias res with treasure hunter brothers Nathan "Nate" Drake (Nolan North) and Samuel "Sam" Drake (Troy Baker) who drive towards an island in a storm while fighting armed gangs on ships before their ship is sunk . Years before, when Nate (Great Britain Dalton) is living in the San Francisco orphanage, he has visited by Sam (Chase Austin), who was expelled for criminal activities. After helping him escape, Sam tells Nate that he is leaving for a job that will keep him out for a few years, before encouraging him by telling him that he knows where the effects of his deceased mother were sold.
Years later (before the events of the first game), the two are on the trail of the famous pirate Henry Avery, who enacted the biggest heist in history in the 1600s, with the booty worth 400 million dollars. Team up with wealthy treasure hunter Rafe Adler (Warren Kole), the brothers cast in a jail in Panama, where Avery's first officer, Burnes, was hanged. With the help of the corrupt guard Vargas (Hemky Wood), Nate sneaks into Burnes' Cell Tower, where he finds a crucifix that points to the treasure of being in the Cathedral of San Dimas in Scotland. When the three of them try to leave, Vargas, who has discovered what they are looking for, tries to blackmail him into giving him a cut. Rafe responds to stab him to death, forcing them to flee. Sam is presumably shot to death in the attempt, leaving Nate so distressed that he gives up the search while Rafe continues without him.

Fifteen years later (three years after the third game) Nate has retired from treasure hunting and now works for a salvage company while trying to enjoy a normal life with his wife Elena (Emily Rose), although not reaches the life of adventure. One night, he is visited in the office by a very lively Sam, who explains that he was saved by 'doctors' and left to rot in jail for the rest of his life because of Vargas' death. However, it was broken by his cellmate, drug trafficker Hector Alcazar (Robin Atkin Downes), who, finding out that Sam does not know where the treasure is contrary to previous statements, gave him three months to find him or suffer his wrath . Although reluctant at first, Nate finally agrees to help Sam while telling Elena that he has taken a rescue job in Malaysia.

After learning of a crucifix similar to Panama's to be sold at an auction on the Rossi estate in Italy, the two team up with Nate's mentor Victor "Sully" Sullivan (Richard McGonagle) and sneak into the auction to steal it. Also in the auction is Rafe, who has subsequently hired the services of Nadine Ross (Laura Bailey) and her paramilitary organization, the beach line. After several closing calls, they manage to steal the cross, inside which is a map telling them that the treasure is in that not the Cathedral of San Dimas, but the cemetery near it.
Upon arriving in Scotland and furtively past Shoreline thugs, Nate and Sam find a series of secret passages under one of the tombs. After what is through a test, they find a room with a scale: on the one hand it is another cross and the other is a group of copper coins. Seeing through deception, Nate Sam takes one of the coins, which activates a map that points to the light of King's Bay in Madagascar. Next, they are cornered by Nadine, who Sam tricks to jump the trap of the scale allowing the two to escape. During this time, Nate begins to suspect that Avery was recruiting other pirates for something.

Following a track in the form of an engraving of a volcano on the coin, the three head to an inactive volcano in the Bahía del Rey. Inside, they learn that Avery, Thomas Tew, and ten other pirates joined their treasures together in a massive buildup. The next clue to the location of the treasure is in one of the twelve towers in the Bahía del Rey. Although shoreline, which somehow came first, they all look for, another mark on the other side of the coin is reduced to two. While Sam goes to one, Nate and Sully go to the other, which turns out to be the most appropriate. After circumnavigating the various tests, Nate relealizes where they are heading.

Before I can tell Sam, who is contacted by Rafe, he reveals that he has been tracking them using GPS on their phones and tries to get them to give up the persecution. Nate refuses and, after getting rid of the phone, rescues Sam from Rafe's men. Back at the hotel, Nate and Sam explain to Sully that the clues point to Libertalia, a remote pirate colony of which Avery and the other captains appear to be the Founders. Before they can establish, Nate confronts Elena, who learned the truth and is not happy. More annoyed when he finds out about Brother Nate has never been mentioned, he leaves, and when Nate refuses to give up the pursuit of going after her, Sully goes in his place.
Now alone, Nate and Sam left for Libertalia, after more clues about several remote islands that eventually point to the right. Returning to where the story began, Nate washed up on the shore of the island and, after several fights with the coast, found Sam. Together, they make Libertalia, where they find evidence of a civil war between the founders and the settlers after the founders keep all the gold for themselves. In the Treasury building, they learn that, to protect the gold, the founders moved to a walled enclave called New Devon on the other side of the island. On the way, they are cornered near a cliff by Rafe, who reveals that he was the one who threw Sam out of prison; Héctor Alcázar died six months earlier. As Nate recovers from disappointment, Rafe considers him no longer needed and tries to shoot. Sam takes the bullet, but Nate still loses the one by the precipice.

Nate is alive with Elena, who changed his mind and found him with Sully's help. Nate then tells the truth about himself: when he and Sam tried to steal his mother's belongings, they were captured by the old woman who lived there. Upon learning who they were, she revealed that her mother, Cassandra Morgan, was a historian specializing in Francis Drake who worked for her. She agrees to let the brothers go but as they do, she collapses and dies, causing Sam and Nate to panic when she had already called the police before they knew who they were. The two fled with their mother's diary and paid tribute to their theory about the descendants of Drake by changing their names. They stayed together from then until the supposed death of Sam.

Understanding now that her past was too painful for him to argue, Elena agrees to help Nate Sam stop, since he no longer cares about the treasure. On the road to New Devon, Rafe and Nadine discuss the motivations: she wants to build her own reputation, while she wants to repair that of her family and society. Arriving in New Devon, Nate and Elena learn that the founders had begun to fight each other. In Tew's house they discover the corpses of most of the founders, and learn that Tew and Avery poison the others to avoid the treasure for themselves. Upon arriving at Avery's house, they enter their catacombs and, avoiding numerous traps, reach a boatyard, where they save Sam from the shoreline and Sully saves Nate. Although Nate seems to convince Sam to resign, he changes his mind after they parted.

The three try to follow him, but Elena and Sully are soon unable to continue, forcing Nate to go alone. Eventually you come to the cavern containing Avery's ship and the treasure, where you see Rafe force a reluctant Nadine to finish the job. Soon after, a fired trap causes an explosion on the ship, which runs to Nate to find the treasure and Sam trapped under a beam. Although Rafe has Nadine disarming Nate, he then becomes him. Pointing at the corpses of Avery and Tew, who killed each other over the treasure, she leaves the three of them behind as she flees. Fed up with the Drake, Rafe dedicates himself to Nate in a duel with swords of Avery and Tew, which ends with Nate dropping a net full of gold on top of him. Nate creates another explosion that floods the room, allowing him to free Sam, and they return their friends and leave on Sully's plane.

Nate and Elena return home while Sam and Sully decide to join. Back home, Nate's boss announces that he is selling the company, and Nate is the new owner. Elena explains that Sam gave her the little gold she got from Libertalia and that she plans to revive her old program, recognizing that a life of adventure is the only life for them. His first job: that of Malaysia lied to him around him.

Years later, Nate and Elena are living on a tropical beach with their teenage daughter Cassie (Kaitlyn Dever). When she discovers objects of her parents' adventures, Elena convinces a Nate initially reluctant to start telling her story Cassie.
