Ragnarok (Not the Movie)

Before the movie Thor:Ragnarok, there was this Korean Role-Playing-Game that hooked young kids like me 15 years ago. This game introduced us to Norse mythology before our English teach did in high school and before that huge handsome dude’s movie hit the silver screens.

Before Loki played tricks on the god of Thunder, we were already there crowding the entrance of the Training Grounds of a newly opened server, Loki. While we were busy smashing, poking, and ganking all these cute little Poring and Lunatics, our Novice eyes were already set for a bigger and brighter future of this online virtual world we’ve created in Rune Midgard.

Online Role-Playing Games was a very big hit in the early 2000s. Started with MU and (boom!), here come’s Gravity’s Ragnarok. It was a pay-to-play online game (at first), so you’ve got to buy ‘Top-Up’ cards, as they call it, to load-up your account to earn hours, days, or months of playing time. Prices would vary depending on the amount of time you would load-up to enjoy the massive world of Rune Midgard. From P50 for an 8-hrs of game time to P350 for a month (if my memory serves me right). The actual game’s playing time is just 1 of the 2 essentials before you can start your grind with a lovely poring, the other thing of course was an Internet Connection. Back then, unlimited FIBR and DSL isn’t yet in the mainstream. What was cool back then was hearing the sound of the **eeeee **errrr **eyooo **eyooo of your computer modem as you tried to connect to Infocom, Nitro, or whatever dial-up ISP you had back then. For me, that sound was and is still a music to my ears and hoping and praying to whatever god you worship that no one, I repeat, no-one! should call your landline, or else, you have to say good bye to that hard-earned “Hydra Card” drop when all of a sudden you got disconnected from the game.

Being a student, there must be an equilibrium between studies and your virtual job as an “Assassin”. Before you hit your poison daggers to a monster, I’ve got to a hit an Algebra book for an exam. Or else, I’ve got to face the ‘Sonic Blow’ slippers from my mom. It was difficult I should say, but was necessary. At the end of the day we all still have to disconnect from our online virtual world, shutdown our computers, and snap back to the reality we call life.
