The Super Mario Kart censorship of Super Nintendo

in #gaming5 years ago

Mario Kart is one of the most famous video games that exists in recent years, each delivery became very popular in each of the Nintendo systems, especially the Nintendo 64, which with its multiplayer mode of 4 simultaneous players could entertain millions of players around the world.

The first game in the series that started with the kart universe was Super Mario Kart, which was released for the Super Nintendo system initially in Japan and then in North America in September 1992, becoming a success due to the innovative way in which the main characters of the Mario universe were seen competing against each other.

Most of the gamers of yesteryear who had the opportunity to play Super Mario Kart played the version they released for North America, this despite being the same with respect to its playability to the Japanese version, had a small detail that differentiated it, it was a censorship that few SNES users knew about it.

Censorship in video games has always existed, the difference of cultures between continents is something that has always been a debate for video games, so Super Mario Kart also had its censorship in those years, this could be seen in the end when you won first place with certain characters on the podium positions.

If we won with Bowser or Princess Peach in the American version you could see how when the bottle was opened the king of the koopas simply holds it, while the princess throws it upwards, this in the Japanese version changes completely, as both characters drink from the bottle, celebrating their victory.

Nintendo of America doesn't like this idea very much, because due to the controversy that video games have had during those years, they didn't want different organizations of parents and representatives who were against video games to claim that Super Mario Kart incited children to drink alcoholic beverages.

In this way Nintendo of America would modify the sprites of each character at the time of the victory celebration, making the typical moves that most of us could see in those years when we had the opportunity to play this fabulous game.

With this small example we can see that the censorship within the world of video games is not simply to eliminate the gore or scenes of sex, also intervene other factors such as drugs or alcoholic beverages, which can be misinterpreted more than anything by people who are dedicated to seek the slightest error to harm the industry.

As personal opinion did not see the need to change that small scene within the game, a child is not able to process that is an alcoholic beverage, may think that it is a refreshing drink or simply water, obviously an adult knows that is not so, however, the past can not be changed, leaving such scenes immortalized in time.

Do you think this censorship was necessary? Tell me your opinion in the comments box
