Ronda Rousey confirmed as playable character in WWE 2K19

2K Sports announced last night that MMA star "Rowdy" Ronda Rousey will be playable in the upcoming WWE 2K19. The 'baddest woman on the planet' makes her WWE 2K debut after appearing in the past three UFC games. This coincides with the fighters transition this year from the UFC and MMA to the WWE and wrestling. Rousey is available as a pre-order bonus, along with former world champion Rey Mysterio. WWE 2K19 is available for Windows, Xbox One and PS4 on October 9. However, those who purchase the Deluxe Edition can play on October 5. While this isn't her first video game appearance, the customisation of WWE 2K games might mean this is her most significant.

Where the UFC games focus on sport simulation, the scripted nature of wrestling means the games have more creative freedom. As a result, the WWE 2K games feature an almost overwhelming amount of customisation. From arenas, wrestlers, entrances, move-sets and championships, players can customise everything. As such, players can create their own storylines, journeys and careers while playing as Rousey. They can even completely customise her moveset, incorporating the many moves of professional wrestling. The possibilities, such as Rousey winning the Women's Championship via a frog splash from the top of a ladder, are endless. However, due to licensing issues it would be fantastic but surprising if her walk out music, Joan Jett's Bad Reputation, will make it into the game.

Alongside the announcement was a trailer, which is typical of WWE 2K games. These trailers are exceptional, see the Sting or Goldberg trailers, but this one is a definite standout. Using audio from an interview between Rousey and her hero, the late Rowdy Roddy Piper, this trailer is full of genuine emotion. With shots of Rousey preparing in the locker room, there is a sense of awe and grandeur. All of this combines for some serious hype that is only fitting for the 'baddest woman on the planet'. While the spotlight might've faded on Rousey since her loss at UFC 193 to Holly Holm, her appearance in 2K gives some much needed mainstream eyes on the gaming industry.
