Sony blocks cross-play once again, this time for Fallout 76

It's disappointing news that we get much too frequently now. Sony has maintained its stance on cross-play for PlayStation once again. This time, Fallout 76 gets caught in the cross-fire.

Todd Howard confirmed that Fallout 76 would not feature cross-play between platforms. In an interview with GameStar, he said 'We’d really love that but right now we can’t. Sony is not as helpful as everyone would like'. Sony has been getting in the way of multiplayer cross-play opportunities for a long time. Many new releases have the capabilities but Sony blocks it from going ahead.

The reasons behind the decision are supposedly that it takes the control away from them. According to the former head of Sony Entertainment Online (now Daybreak), 'they didn't like the idea of someone buying a game on Xbox and then it being used on a PlayStation'. So it might just be down to the money instead of thinking about the players.

Many other titles have gone down this path before, willing to try cross-play but being knocked back by Sony. Games like Fortnite, Minecraft, Rocket League and many more want to let us play with people that might not have the same console as us. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like Sony will be changing their stance on this issue for some time. So, for now, we will have to stick to playing with those on the same platform.

Fallout 76 will be arriving in November later this year. It will be available on PC, PlayStation and Xbox but unfortunately without cross-play. For more information about the game, you can read our coverage of Bethesda's E3 showcase.
