Developers of Warhammer40k games have it easy, they can just follow the source material and model everything from WH40k tabletop game and end up with great looking game. This is certainly the case with Mechanicus which is a new turn based strategy with RPG elements. Game follows an expedition of robotic humans who follow the machine spirit and teachings of the metal and use that knowledge to explore Necron infested planet of Silva Tenebris.

You control a small squad of elite Adeptus Mechanicus units that you send on many dangerous missions on the planet infested with Necrons. Your goal is to explore the tombs of this ancient race of undead metal warriors set to extinguish all life in the galaxy. Your squad of equally capable machine warriors who were once made of flesh are now something far different than they used to be in their human form. When you clear the tombs you gain Blackstone resource which you can use to get rid of the flesh of your Techpriests and augment them with new robotic limbs that increase their survivability and damage outputs.

Game plays like Heroes of Might and Magic games in turn based combat, the inspiration from that game screams through out Mechanicus. There are few new additions that expand the formula like changeable terrains and some more powerful Techpriests can perform multiple actions per turn like firing multiple shots, gather cognition points and then smack the enemy with an axe. It goes far beyond the capabilities of one unit, one Techpriest is a one man army, imagine what 6 of them can do. Once you beat the mission you end up on your ship where you can upgrade your Techpriests and chose your next missions, unlock Skitarii warriors, an expendable units that can boost your fighting power during more difficult missions. You can also use Canticles when things get tough which are like spells that can heal up or boost your troops.

This game shows a huge potential what Warhammer40k games can do. With nice soundtrack and graphics this is certainly a game worth your time if you're a Warhammer40k fan, it is tactical, grotesque and awesome, what more can you ask for. Score: 85/100!
