Tennis World Tour Preview - Breakthrough potency after 7 years

The laces are extra tightly stitched, the tennis rackets are tightly stretched and our soles move smoothly over the hot gravel of a crowded stadium. It's time for tennis and in this Tennis World Tour Preview you can read what we think of the game so far.

Tennis World Tour is the latest simulation tennis game that must be available to everyone with a PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch in the month of May. The game contains almost everything we can expect from a good tennis game. There is an extensive career mode and there are more than 30 official players to play with, only there are no official tournaments in the game.

Yet this Tennis World Tour does not immediately give us a big backlog, since it has been years ago that we were able to move back and forth across the virtual tennis courts with the Swiss hero Roger Federer. To be precise almost 7 years ago, because on March 15 in 2011 Top Spin 4 came out. So we can say to the least that it is time for a new game about this sport and that time has arrived with Tennis World Tour.

Tennis World Tour and Top Spin also have something in common right away. A number of developers of the well-known Top Spin franchise is in fact involved in this tennis game, which is made by Breakpoint Studio. A brand new studio specially designed for the development of this new tennis game. A game that at the moment in many areas knows how to hit the ball, but occasionally needs some help from the sidelines.

Fanaticism

By that we mean that the game has a number of very positive points that certainly catches on. If we look at the gameplay, without going into it deeply, then the fun from the first battle with the racket will immediately start. Whether you know all the ins and outs of the sport or not, that does not matter.

Because Tennis World Tour has several layers that make it fun and interesting for every gamer. For example, beginners who have the controls in their heads can simply get started with the game without falling into a bath full of ambiguities. Press the right buttons and you will notice that the ball reaches the other side quite easily. Timing is not important.

This does not mean that Tennis World Tour does not present a challenge for the somewhat more experienced Top Spin huts among us. Because by choosing a good tactic you can ensure that the opponent leaves the tennis battlefield with a sombre look.

Draft

You can set these tactics by assigning your player different skills, the so-called Skill System. This system gives your player a number of advantages over your opponent. At least, if you know how to apply this skill system to the qualities of yourself and your opponent. You can choose from an arsenal of skills that will allow you to excel in certain qualities.

This system ensures that players with more experience are presented with a more difficult tune. Determining how to properly apply these skills to the opponent is interesting and creates an extra layer in the game.

Even though it is still questionable to what extent this system is actually going to change things in the game. While playing, more was explained about the system than we actually saw everything in action. When we picked up our tennis rackets and started to hit the ball these skills hardly came forward. The impact of the skills already assigned by the game on the players was not immediately visible, but this does not make the whole system less interesting. It remains to be seen how this system eventually unfolds.

Something else

With this system, Breakpoint ensures that Tennis World Tour does not become a copy of the last Top Spin but is completely in itself. An own identity, which the developer tries to create with a number of other changes compared to the last released Top Spin game.

For example, at Top Spin one of the most important elements in the game was the timing. If you made sure that you hit the ball at exactly the right moments, you were almost certain that the opponent would have a hard time.

Now this is a thing of the past in Tennis World Tour. A good position and how hard you hit the ball are now the main focus point. This makes it easier for new players who just want to play a game of Tennis on their console or PC and add the more complex skill system and you have a perfectly developed balance for both new and experienced players.

The balance on the field is sometimes only slightly less visible. For Tennis World Tour, a number of tennis players with motion capture have been recorded to provide a realistic picture of the sport. Here the game only sometimes goes wrong.

For example, the animations of tennis are very monotonous and the same movements of hitting often occur. After a while you have seen how Gaël Monfils and Roger Federer hit back a tennis ball when they have to walk back a bit to get to the ball.

Speaking of the almost always understated Roger Federer, sometimes the animations are not correct after playing a set or match. You will not catch this Swiss man so quickly that he throws his tennis racket in the air after winning a set. In Tennis World Tour this happens, as this celebration also happens with the other 30 licensed players.

Preliminary Conclusion

But despite the fact that these 30 licensed players still have to deal with a few defects, Tennis World Tour is full of fun. The matches are fun, the system of skills is interesting and all aspects are on the table to bring a successful tennis game to the market. Although it remains to be seen how everything will eventually work when the full game is released in May, we are enthusiastic enough. We can not wait to pull our inner Roger Federer out of our fingertips in Tennis World Tour.
