The title kind of describes the plot already. The zombie apocalypse has come, invading and bringing death to every place in the world... Except for Canada, of course. Your objetive is to travel either by car or by foot from Miami to Canada, scavenging for resources and making life and death decisions.

Death Road to Canada doesn't take the apocalypse too seriously, instead jokes and pop culture references are everywhere and well placed to make you at least giggle for some time. While playing this game you'll oscilating from "Oh, tons of zombies there, how do I escape?" to "Haha, I got that".

Although fun and jokes are scattered all around, it doesn't mean is an easy game, specially when the night strikes and you're out in the field scavenging for supplies.

At the beginning of every Playthrough you'll have to choose a gamemode and this game offers a handful of them.

  • Death Road Normal: The normal main mode and the recommended to play first.
  • Familiar Mode: The same as normal mode but with the only difference that every survivor you find will be a character you've created.
  • Rare Mode: Same as normal mode but every survivor you find will be a character of a book, movie, series or other game.

This are the three unlocked gamemodes you'll be able to play right away. Later on, when you have beaten all this gamemodes, higher difficulties and even crazier gamemodes will become available for your to try and challenge yourself!

After choosing a gamemode, the game will let you create a character or choose one at random. You'll also be given the choice of having a partner or going solo. You can also customize your partner or give him/her a random appereance.

Here's where the rare feature of Local Multiplayer comes to play. If you choose a partner, you can activate the option so a friend of yours takes control of the partner via a controller, while you take control of the leader via the keyboard. And let me tell you, it's quite the fun ride when you play it with company!

Once you have created your character and set up all the equipment your character's going to use, you'll be thrown into the road.

Travelling by car with little supplies, every now and then you'll be presented with choices, every one of them with consequences and rewards. You'll be choosing which of the two or three places your party spooted should be scavenged, or something like a random encounter with bandits and you need to make a decision about who's going negotiate, intimidate them or just comply and give them your supplies.

When choosing which place to scavenge, there's no wrong answer, it'll all depend on the amount of supplies you have and the places you have the option to go. If you see yourself going low on food but also none of your characters have a decent weapon, which place would you go: Abandoned Mall or a Police Station? Maybe in the Mall you'll find some decent melee weapons and food, or maybe in the Police Station you'll find a rifle and a couple of snacks!

Every character will have its own set of stats and perks, and it's important you know every one of them when making decisions, although, the game won't go easy on you on that. At the beginning of the game, all the traits and stats from your characters will be hidden and you'll get to know how proficient they're in certain matters when they have already tried that specific matter. So there's no choice but to send that character who seems to have a mechanic face to fix the car and, at the end, check how much of a mechanic he/she really is!... The worst thing that can happen is that the car explodes if your character knows nothing about mechanics, no big deal.

By scanvenging and getting out of difficult situations, your characters will "Level Up" and you'll get to choose if you want to raise a single stat, give a random perk to a character, or to give morale to all your characters and raise a random stat. I think the later is the funniest one, as you'll never know how your characters will end up be.

While out in the field, you'll get to control your character, walk around, search in the rooms for weapons and supplies, and swing that weapon of yours against the rotten ones.

The combat is quite fun, responsive and smooth but a it's a little hard to get used to for keyboard users as the game is meant to be played with a controller.

And, let me warn you, having a good melee weapon and tons of zombies around doesn't mean you can get on a killing spree without consequence. Your characters have a certain amount of stamina that is not shown during the action, so you need to be aware of their expressions. When you see them sweating and all red is means they're getting tired and the time between swings will increase by a significant amount. How fast this happens will depend on the weapon the character is using, if it's a heavy weapon and his/her strenght and fitness stat is low, they'll get tired rather quickly, so be wise when choosing weapons!

Talking about weapons, this game has tons of them, ranging from planks, bats and hammers to two-handed swords and machine-guns. You can even use the bones of your fallen enemies as a last resource! There are endless option on what you'll find when you set out to scavenge a place, and that's one of the more exciting features, you'll never know what you'll find.

But be careful, some places will have more undead and thicker swarms that won't let you move as freely. Even in some places you'll be force to stand there for a certain period of time to be able to escape. Those are called "Sieges" and can happen randomly during your travels or you can get into a siege if you choose a place that has the swarms to it.

So, choosing and managing your characters equipment after going out is quite important, even having a character with a flashlight during the dark will make your scavenging even safer.

Now, to wrap things up, let's talk about the art-style and sountrack. The game looks pretty but simple. Every design is well made, representing perfectly what characters and objects are, and the simplicity compliments the smooth gameplay.

The soundtrack is really good, having pretty 8-bit melodies everywhere you go. Although some of them can be too happy for the situation, the game knows when the thing is about to get serious, and change its tone completely to something more spooky and actiony.

I'll leave the trailer here so you can see for yourself!

Death Road to Canada is an awesome game, filled with content to explore and jokes and fun to be had. If you liked it, don't doubt into visiting its STEAM PAGE and inviting a friend over to play, you won't regret it!
