Doom was released in 1993 for MS-DOS platform. The genre that is adopted by this video game is a first-person shooter (FPS). The developer of this amazing video game was Id Software. The story of this video game is about science fiction horror (we will discuss it more in another part). In the original video game, there are nine-level episodes and was distributed through mail order and shareware. An update of this video game was released in 1995.

In this video game, the player plays as an unnamed space marine who is popularly known as "Doomguy". In his way, he fights a bunch of invading demons from hell. One-third of nine episodes were distributed as shareware. Within 2 years, there were 15-20 million people who played Doom. In addition, to popularize the first-person shooter video games, Doom was a pioneer that immersed in 3D graphics, networked multiplayer gaming, and support for customized additions and modifications.

Moreover, the developer made some several sequels to this video game. For example, in 1994, Doom II: Hell on Earth was released and it was also included many expansion packs such as Master Levels for Doom II and Final Doom. After success in MS-DOS, later, Doom was ported to other platforms. In addition, in 2004, a sequel of Doom was also released that was named Doom 3.

Gameplay

The viewpoint of this video game is the first person. Thus, the players see the game like using their own eyes. The main character of this video game has no name but it is known as "Doomguy". The gameplay of this video game is quite similar to classic shooter games which present the player with the obstacles to survive. The players have to shoot every single enemy in sight. In order to complete the game, the player must fight various enemies such as Phobos, Deimos, and then Hell itself. Each episode of this video game consists of eight distinct levels, along with an optional hidden level for each episode.

The mission of each level is quite easy to explain but it's hard to do it. The player must locate the exit room that brings the player to next place. The room is marked with an exit sign and/or a special kind of door. On the way to find exit room, the player must survive from all dangers. The dangers can be demonic monsters, pits of toxic or radioactive slime, ceilings that lower and crush anything below them, and locked doors which require a keycard, skull-shaped key device, or a remote switch to be located.

During the game, the players will face some labyrinthine levels. Then, the players also can get some supported items such as additional ammo, health increases, and power-ups. There is a full-screen automap that helps players to navigates through the levels. There is a secret level in many series of Doom including its sequel. This secret level can help the players to find alternate exits. In addition, there are some cheat codes for this video game. These cheat codes allow the player to be invulnerable, gathering every weapon, ability to kill enemies instantly, and other abilities.

PLOT

An unnamed space marine who has been punitively posted to Mars because of attacking a superior officer, who commanded his unit to fire on civilians. The Martian space marine base serves a security for multi-planetary conglomerate Union Aerospace Corporation's radioactive waste facilities, which are used by the military to conduct secret experiments with teleportation by developing gateways between the two moons of Mars, Phobos, and Deimos.

Space marines consider Mars as the dullest assignment imaginable. However, everything has changed since the conducted experiments go wrong. Phobos's computer systems become malfunction thus, Deimos disappears entirely, and "something fraggin' evil" starts pouring out of the gateways. These evils kill or possess all personnel.

In order to respond calling from the overrun scientists, a Martian marine unit is sent quickly by ship to Phobos from Mars for investigating. The "Doomguy" who is only equipped with a pistol is ordered to take care of the perimeter while the rest of the unit explores inside. The "Doomguy" hears many radio messages, gunfire, and screams, followed by silence: "Seems your buddies are dead." He cannot navigate the ship off of Phobos alone and sees that the only way out is to fight through the Phobos complex.
