Die 16-jährige Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg) lebt in zwei sehr gegensätzlichen Welten: Sie stammt aus einer ärmlichen, hauptsächlich von schwarzen Familien bewohnten Gegend, in der der Drogenhandel floriert. Von Montag bis Freitag besucht sie aber eine Privatschule für privilegierte, überwiegend weiße Kinder. Beide Welten sind Starr wichtig, doch sie fühlt sich zunehmend innerlich zerrissen. Als sie eines Tages Zeugin wird, wie ihr bester Freund Khalil (Algee Smith) von einem Polizisten erschossen wird, gerät die Teenagerin unter Druck. Sie soll eine Aussage treffen, fürchtet sich jedoch davor, ins Visier des Drogenbosses (Anthony Mackie) zu geraten, für den Khalil gedealt hat. Gleichzeitig gehen in ihrem Viertel immer mehr Menschen auf die Straße, um gegen Polizeigewalt zu protestieren. Starr sucht nach einem Weg, sich von keiner Seite beeinflussen zu lassen und das Richtige zu tun.
