We finally put out the garden!

in #garden6 years ago (edited)

The weather in Tennessee was very unusual this year. The last spring frost was supposed to be April 22 according to the almanac but our last below freezing night was April 30th.

Finally the temperature has been in the consistent 80's the last few days and we finally decided it was time.

We are going way smaller this year and picked a spot behind the shed. I'm still messing around with the camera and this shot was in vivid mode. I wish I would have kept all the shots in this mode, but I did not

The ground was solid so we had to do some manual labor because the small tiller we have would never be able to properly till the soil in the current state.

The little tiller is doing the job.

After tilling we put down one foot wide plastic to help with weeding. Small slits will be cut into the plastic with a knife so the plants can be inserted into the ground.

We bought a small greenhouse this year with the intention of starting our own seeds but we time caught up with us and we bought seedlings from a nursery.

It would have been easier to lay the plastic if it was wider but this plastic was on clearance and it's really thick.

We started working on the garden around 5pm. It did get dark on us but we were determined to get more finished.

The person in the picture is my wife's aunt. She somehow magically shows up out of no where when we start on bigger projects.

She's always willing to give a hand and we'll be sure to give her some veggies this year.

So far we planted peppers, broccoli, corn, cucumbers, and watermelon.

There are tomatoes in a single bucket that need to be separated. They will serve as weights for the plastic and I need probably put out some longer pieces of wood to cover the whole width of the plastic to keep it from blowing away.

The last picture is of the three kiddos. The kiddo on the left is lecturing me about the flash from the camera and her displeasure with it:-)

I'll be sure to make updates on the progress of the garden.

There will more than likely be a war of the bunnies this year and it could get interesting
