Chickpeas setting fruit
Special greetings to @captainklaus - our first customer in the @homesteaderscoop shop! He got our mix of black and white chickpeas! So I thought to show how we grow the plant that gives us the seeds.
It's a very simple raised bed setup 4 by 1 metres in size. We plant five or six rows of seeds in that. The aim is to have a thick stand of chickpeas.
Most of the seeds are actually eaten still green by the kids who walk around the bed and forage the lowest seed pods. Still that leaves us the plants in the middle of the bed which usually are enough for several large servings of hummus :) and of course for next year's seed.
As you can see there are plenty of weeds in that bed but because the chickpeas are very close to one another the weeds are not really a problem. I especially like the poppies that pop in the bed every year! :)

Ooh, I would love to grow my own chickpeas!
Poppies are so beautiful but I have not been able to grow them here.
It would be lovely for you to make a post on how you dry your chick peas, if you do!

Thank you for your comments! I will try to remember and make a post later in the summer! We don't do anything special - we just let the plants dry. Within collect the dry seed pods and shell them. It usually our kids job by the way! They love shelling beans, peas and other legumes.

Oooh - interesting! I eat chickpeas OFTEN (had them tonight in a yummy chana marsala here in Laos PDR) but have actually never seen them growing. Nice.
