Farm Prepping - Casually Preparing For The Spring Growing Season

in #gardening5 years ago

Warm weather means time spent outdoors on the garden farm!

Today we went around and pulled some dead plants and dropped some fertilizer in the soil.

Brussel Sprouts from last Fall made a lasting meal over the Winter for Animals sticking it out in the cold.

Potato mounds from last year. Not sure what I’ll plant here this year, Iv learned its best to rotate crops such as potatoes, tomatoes and pepper. So I’ll have to do some planning.

But check what the elements did to the hugel mounds! Naturally tilled the soil it appears! Is that because of the decaying matter beneath the soil giving off gases and warmth?! Perhaps..

My 9 month pregnant future wife inside the topless greenhouse prepping some dirt trays for greens this Spring.

Without any airflow the greenhouse becomes way too hot for any fresh greens during the full Summer Sun. I will need to research some ways on obtaining a natural airflow to help cool. I’ll use the water heat sink barrel again this year, unlike last year, but I still feel I will need some more cooling power.

Early Garlic already thriving! This special plant was given to me by a wonderful colleague from my night job.

Planted multiple bulbs in so special order all over this hugel mound. Clearly, they overwintered properly and are making their early Spring vegetation! Thank you @funnyfarm77

We counted about eight bulbs growing on the mound here. Tough to pick out in the phone photo.

All the fish have most certainly survived the winter without any assistance at all. No feed, no heat... but after a moment of thought, I realize that every time I pump the water off the pool cover, it drains down into their pond.. giving them fresh, oxygenated semi warm water.. must be how they survived all winter long.

I fed them some shredded brussel sprouts from what I pulled up above. It brought them out for a bit before they all went back under their leafy hideaway.

Lots more to do around here.

Peace y’all!

Looks like you have made a great start for planting in the spring. Yes rotating crops is very important.

You might want to find a small solar powered fan for the green house.

Lots of work ahead of you to finish getting ready for planting.
