Very interesting! I know nothing about this plant, but, it sounds that they may be somewhat of a "cool weather" plant? I wonder if planting something taller on the south side of it to offer it some shade throughout the summer and thereby offering it a cooler habitat might help?

Very good point! At first we thought so as well so we planted them in mixed shade. However for two years they didn't grow at all, not a single cm! After we moved them to a sunnier spot, they started growing more. Hubby thinks the problem is relatively low humidity, as compared to their original habitat.
