PRICKLY PEAR CACTUS ... update

in #gardening6 years ago (edited)

Potted a cactus pad in early Spring. After it started to grow planted it in backyard with some Butterflyweed.

Always wanted some cactus since I saw some growing wild in a very old cemetery. Now I got one.

They have the largest range of any cactus in the USA.

if it survives a few years it may flower, and if it does and produces fruit its something interesting to try. Prickly pear fruit require special prep to eat but taste like a cross between a strawberry and watermelon.

Sounds interesting.I'll just grew it cuss I can. :-)

ah yeah they grow just about anywhere it does not freeze.

Growing good! Won't be long for pretty blooms!

I remember seeing these all over northern
California. Some patches looked very old, washed
down different creeks from some old ranches and
farm houses.

Pretty but don't touch.

My mom tried to kill one once but it survived the winter after she dumped it on the ground. They are one tough plant!

I may have created a monster.

You have your very own prickly pear cactus...cool! Excited to see the butterflies. : )

My brown thumb came through.
