3 NEW Things We Are Growing in the Garden This Year!!

I’ve only had 2 gardens in my adult life. Both were extremely simple so I haven’t gotten the chance to experiment with many new plants. Last year we tried tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, cayenne peppers and catnip. If you’ve been following us for a while you know that we were only successful with the cucumbers and catnip. So pretty much everything in our garden this year is new. I’m going to highlight the 3 plants I am most excited about this year and then share the rest of our garden plans.

What 3 new things are we growing this year?

I am most excited about the Nonna Agnes’ Blue Bean. This is a seed from Baker Creek and was given to me this Christmas by my mother in law. I love the deep blue color of the beans and I’m really excited to get these going. Unfortunately these seeds are no longer available. I’m hoping that is just because they ran out this season and they will be back next year as they only send TEN beans in a pack. Hopefully my beginner gardening skills don’t kill them all off!

We are also going to be trying out the Luffa Gourd. If you aren’t familiar this plant is where the true luffa sponges come from! Not the body puffs you use in the shower. We use luffa in the shower and now we will be able to produce our own. Since we know where they came from I will feel safe composting them on our property. If we have extras I would like to make it a source of income for our homestead.

The third plant I am most excited to experiment with is the Zhuang Zhou Melon. These seeds were a gift from @lindasymonds. She was having a hard time growing these in her climate and offered seeds up to anyone who would like to try them. If you would like to read more about this melon check out her post here. I’m hoping our warm climate and long growing season will help these melons thrive. We are trying a TON of new plants. These are the three I’m most excited about and the most unique.

So what else will we be growing this year? You may have seen that we set up a portion of our new garden. We weren’t able to prep the full size so we will be utilizing last year’s garden space as well. The back garden will have cucumbers, peas, lettuce, arugula, and catnip. We are also experimenting with a pineapple plant and a strawberry plant.

(Why not grow ALL the lettuce?)

In the front garden we will have tomatoes, cucumbers, broccoli, strawberries, corn, cantaloupe, watermelon, green beans, zucchini, bell peppers, jalapeno peppers and cayenne peppers. I am undecided on which variety of tomato to try so if you’ve tried any of these and have suggestions please let me know!!

(Livingston’s Favorite, Black Vernissage, Moneymaker and Beefsteak)

I’m probably going a little overboard but after last year’s gardening fiasco I’d rather try a bunch of plants and maybe get something than only try a few and end up with only cucumbers.

Oooo! Good luck! Looking forward to hearing what grows well for you this year! I also have a hard time growing things in GA. Partly heat, partly poor soil, which is fixable...

I have poor soil and poor light. We gotta get a bunch of trees cut down!

Good luck with your gardens!! How big do the luffa gourds get?

Thank you! I have no idea haha. I've never seen a full one in real life. They look like they get to be maybe a foot long?

Happy Sunday! This comment is to inform you that your article has been linked and featured in the most recent Weekly Homesteading Newsletter! Thank you and have a great day!
