Greenhouse Tour: Unique Plants & Fall Seed Starting (Vlog)

in #gardening6 years ago (edited)

Hey! Today we wanted to share with you some of the unique plants that are growing in our High Tunnel and give a little tour.

Ini especially has been planting and up-potting (the term for putting a plant into a bigger pot to give it more room to grow, pretty self explanatory really ;)) quite a bit.

Check out this DTube Video to have a tour of our greenhouse and hear about some of the plants that will go in our other larger greenhouse this fall. We're almost finished setting up! We've also started a lot of fall greens and other vegetables that will be put outside.

Here is the blog portion of it as we know some people don't like to watch videos!

We've been sharing a lot of updates about the new (bigger) high tunnel that we're putting up (plastic is going on tomorrow! yay!), but don't want the little one to feel neglected, plus some really cool things are going on in there. Come along for a tour!

Ini recently up-potted some Goji berries.

We actually had then in the ground for the longest time, but they weren't taking off- even after a year! So we decided it was time to baby them a little bit more. Goji is a berry you may be familiar with from the grocery, they're usually dried. They're really good for you and we're excited to have them on the homestead!

We also have a couple figs, Magnolia variety, that we are babying a bit in preparation to put them in the bigger high tunnel.

We're super excited to have a whole row of figs! Usually outdoors in our zone (6b), figs die back every year and come up anew the next. This really lessens their fruit production. Growing figs in a High Tunnel or Greenhouse, in these zones and below, can really amp up the amount and quality of fruit that you'll get!!

Ini also has done an amazing job of starting SEED TRAYS of some of our favorite veggies for Fall!

(Yes, it's crazy we're already thinking of fall, but you can feel it in the air and the evenings are certainly getting cool, we've even donned a wool blanket and some nights a down comforter!)

He's started:

  • Broccoli
  • Chard
  • Kale (2 varieties)
  • Cabbage (2 varieties)
  • Collards
  • Cucumbers
  • Chervil
  • Celeriac

Woo! We're off to a great start for fall.

We also have a ton of strawberries that we took from the runners.

If you're not familiar, strawberries naturally produce "runners" which, as it sounds via the name, are long strands with roots on the bottom that shoot out from the mother plant. In this way, strawberries colonize an area pretty effectively! They like more space than that however to set the most high quality fruit, so we don't let them get too crowded. We've up-potted these root tips from the runners and will set them out when we decide on a space for them- maybe in the new high tunnel!

Next up is the Egyptian or walking onion- there seems to be a theme here with plants that walk!!

Ini has taken the heads that form on the tops of these onions and put them in pots. Normally they will actually just fall over (from the weight of the bulbous seed heads) and "walk" to wherever they've fallen and start a new onion. The next year that seed head will also "walk" as the weight becomes too much. This is one of my favorite plants and having it in a pot gives us a little head start with an onion body that has shot up from the root! Where will we put these? Not sure yet!

Yaupon holly!

For anyone who was here with us in the beginning of the year, you'll remember we took a trip to Arkansas in search of North America's Yerba Mate relative, Yaupon holly! We ended up finding a few plants and transplanted them into pots on our homestead. Some of them are taking off! They're still tiny, but we're really excited to have some native caffeine on the homestead!

Cacti!

When in Florida we picked up a spineless variety of cacti. We love nopales (the pads from the cacti) and are excited about growing this in the big high tunnel as well. Surprisingly, cacti live in the wild here and we eat those sometimes, too, but, hey!, it's nicer to not have to deal with the crazy thorns!

We also went over a tour of the existing plants in the ground in the High Tunnel which include a mess of tomatoes, squash and peppers! Harvest Season!

Thanks for tuning in!

Thanks for the tour. Looks like good eatin' come fall at mountainjewel :) I could eat berries all day long everyday but fall flavors have their place too.

we totally agree!! and many of these are perennials which will hopefully provide food/medicine/caffeine for years to come. ya know, thinking of our future selves (and future guests!) :)

Walking onions are the same as spring onions? They're about the only thing I can grow. I just snip off at the base and they keep on regrowing, its great!!

You certainly have a very interesting collection of plants there! And pretty exotic, from the looks of things. We haven't ventured beyond what will grow freely outside in our climate... aside from occasionally putting a cover over the raised beds in early spring when there's still a slight chance of overnight frosts.

Bright Blessings!

Thanks inspires me again. Quality of planting good is so important. Where I work we buy most of the more difficult stuff like lettuce and fennel.
