Planting garlic in a Mittleider garden
Today we are planting garlic in our Mittleider garden out in the soil. Fall is here and we are just a few weeks from our first expected frost for 2019. We had about 2 pounds of Armenian garlic and decided to put as much of it in the garden until it was all gone. When we were done, we were able to plant 100 cloves of the Armenian garlic before the rain started. Those 100 cloves took up 100” of our Mittleider soil bed, just over 8 feet.
We don’t need much in the way of tools for this job. Just a garden planning detail sheet, measuring device, and a small transplanting shovel. The shovel was necessary because of our heavy clay soil here in northern Missouri. Had we placed the garlic in the grow boxes inside the greenhouse we could have just popped the garlic directly into the sand and sawdust.
Garlic is one of the few plants in a Mittleider garden which is planted in 4 rows. The spacing, number of rows, and planting depth can be found for all plants in the garden planting details sheet. It is available in the back of the Mittleider gardening course book or can be downloaded from the Mittleider gardening Facebook group.
If you were to do a full bed of garlic 360 cloves would be required. A 10 foot bed full of garlic would require 120 cloves. Those numbers should help you to calculate how many you will need for your purpose.
