Rheumatoid Arthritis: How It Works And The Best Treatment We Know For Improved Quality of Life

In the US, 1.3 million people suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an auto-immune disorder where the immune system attacks the joints and soft tissues. Although it most frequently affects the hands and feet, it can affect any joint in the body (specifically, the synovium tissue is affected). :

RA causes:

stiffness
swelling
Redness & heat in the joints
Joint deformity
limited joint function and motion
Low fevers
Loss of appetite
Rheumatoid nodules
Loss of energy
Sjogren’s syndrome frequently presents concurrently and causes dry mouth

While rheumatoid arthritis can develop at any age, it generally appears between ages 40 and 60 and affects three times more women than men. It is a cyclical disease, in that there are periods of flares and remission. Its effects are debilitating and long-term, and modern medicine offers no cure.

For more than 80 years, gold has been used to treat rheumatoid arthritis; recently developed nanotechnology has improved this traditional treatment.

In rheumatoid arthritis, the cells of the immune system incorrectly attack healthy cells lining the joints. A cascade of chemicals released in this reaction causes inflammation. Macrophages, a type of white blood cell, play a “critical role in the initiation, maintenance, and resolution of inflammation”.
