Yesterday was one of our last chances to take the kids out for a day trip on their visit for Spring Break. We decided to take them hunting for barite rose crystals near one of the lakes in the area.

Last time I was here with my friend we found several smaller size crystals, anywhere from pea to golf ball size. I had found a tip online to search an area with a slightly submerged island near the dam of the lake.

The water was too high and cold to walk to the island, with the water reaching nearly waist level. Water temperatures were near 45 degrees, much too cold for bare skin unless you have a stock of towels with you.

Instead this time I took some insulated waders that come to mid-waist level. The water level was even higher than the last time, but I was able to wade successfully with the water coming very close to the top of the waders. I tripped on a submerged tree once and almost lost balance, bringing a small splash of cold water down my pants.

The small island was only about 25 yards from the shore, only a foot above the water level. I was pleased to find several clusters and handfuls of smaller crystals just laying on the surface. After about an hour of thorough searching I found several high class specimens and many, many "smaller" crystals. The total weight of crystals was near 20 pounds when I decided to head back to the shore.

The largest barite rose crystal specimen was 398 grams, nearly one pound. Estimated value of this one crystal is between $75-100. Total value of this trip is moderately estimated to be around $400-500. Not bad for one hour of work and one hour of driving.

The crystals will soak for a few days to loosen the red dirt and clay, then scrub clean and dry. I may share the final product when it is done.

Thanks for looking.

Yes, would be great to see the best cleaned up.
The last few rock hunting trips have been poor - interesting minerals but nothing of value :-(
