"Keeping the box closed just keeps you in the dark, not the universe... but failing to open the box doesn't kill the cat." ~ John Green

Welcome to the 134th Daily Field Note! Here you find the top post of the day, one covering each scientific field that is included by Geopolis. Since these authors put a lot of effort in writing a good post they surely deserve the extra exposure.

Geopolis is a project to promote and connect authors who write in the fields of global sciences. You can read more about the project and how to join here:

Geography: Geographic thought : A philosophical construct of geography as the mother of all sciences

Original post by @prettyprecy

A philosophical foundation was secured for geography within the framework of the philosophy of science. This was done by the great Prussian philosopher, Immanuel Kant. Kant stated that empirical knowledge could be considered from three organizational view point.

The first is to sort facts according to the kind of objects studied, which is the realm of the 'systematic sciences'. - The second is to study facts in their relationship through time which is the 'historical sciences'. As we all know historical sciences has to do with the past, ancient knowledge of the past. - The third viewpoint is to study things as they are associated with space and this can be referred to as the 'geographical sciences'.

Ecology: Bring Back Your Dead: De-Extinction

Original post by @mountainwashere

Jurassic Park might be one of my favorite movies, but, sadly, the first thing to understand about the de-extinction process is that we're almost certainly going to be unable to bring back any dinosaurs. Their DNA is just too degraded. De-extinction (pretty self explanatory, just bringing back a species from extinction) is, if nothing else, one of the coolest projects science is embarking on- it's also, however, one of the projects most surrounded by questions regarding whether we should carry it out even if we can.

Archeology: Slavery in South Africa Part 2/ Slave Lodge- The institution of Slavery in its Colonial Context.

Original post by @highonthehog

At Vergelegen Willem Adriaan van der Stel had well over 200 slaves- possibly 300- the most ever in private hands and on the property in the cape. He had built up his enormous slaveholding from slavery expeditions, passing ships and on the local market. Large slaveholdings such as this where the exception in the Cape: it was only the Dutch East India Company slave lodge in the Cape Town that exceeded Vergelegen in size.
